Wimbledon 2022: Birthday boy MS Dhoni, Sunil Gavaskar spotted in star-studded London crowd

MS Dhoni celebrated the eve of his 41st birthday in style as he enjoyed some high-quality tennis action at Wimbledon 2022. The former India captain was spotted among a star-studded crowd at the SW19, cheering on his favourite tennis stars.

MS Dhoni looked dapper in a grey blazer and white shirt and was sporting black shades as he watched Wimbledon 2022 action from the stands with his friends.

4-time Indian Premier League champions Chennai Super Kings took to social media to share a photo of MS Dhoni from Wimbledon 2022 on the legendary cricketer’s 41st birthday.

CSK hinted that Dhoni was on the iconic Centre Court, watching the men’s singles quarter-final between Rafael Nadal and Taylor Fritz that ended with the Spaniard, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, winning in 5 sets. The 2nd seed battled an abdomen injury as he lost 2 of his first three sets but he brought out the warrior spirit in him to beat the 11th-seeded American in a valiant battle that stretched to a fifth-set tie-breaker.

Football great David Beckham was also among the crowd on the Centre Court as he led the standing ovation for Nadal at the end of the quarter-final match that extended beyond 4 hours.

Meanwhile, Sania Mirza was also playing in her maiden Wimbledon mixed doubles semi-final along with her Croatian partner Mate Pavic on Court Two, taking on the defending champions Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk.

Batting great Sunil Gavaskar was also spotted in the Wimbledon crowd on Wednesday.

Notably, MS Dhoni, who led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup trophies, retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. However, the former skipper has been playing the IPL for Chennai Super Kings.

Dhoni led CSK to their 4th title in 2021 but the 4-time champions had a horror run in 2022, failing to qualify for the playoffs for the second time.

Dhoni, who had set social media on fire with his ‘definitely not’ phrase after IPL 2020 in the UAE, once again rubbished speculation about his IPL future, saying he would work hard to return to play for CSK in 2023.

“Well, I think, definitely,” Dhoni said, responding to West Indies great and presenter Ian Bishop at the toss ahead of CSK’s last game of IPL 2022 against Rajasthan Royals.

“It’s a simple reason. It will be unfair to not play in Chennai and say thank you. Mumbai is one place where, as a team and as an individual, I have got a lot of love and affection. But, you know it won’t be nice to the CSK fans.”

“And also, hopefully next year the teams will get an opportunity to travel, so it will be like a thank all the different places where we will be playing games at different venues.

“Whether it will be my last year or not that’s a big question because you know we can’t really predict about something two years down the line, but definitely I’ll be working hard to come back strong next year,” Dhoni added.
